The use of vegetable oil in transformers plays two key roles in this process:
Insulation: Good insulation is required between the windings of the transformer, between the windings and the core, and between the windings and the casing. Vegetable oil can fill the gaps between these parts to prevent electrical breakdown. Its insulating properties ensure that the transformer can operate safely at high voltages, just like an insulating barrier that prevents current from flowing in paths where it should not flow.
Cooling: The transformer generates heat during operation, mainly due to iron loss (core loss) and copper loss (winding loss). Vegetable oil can absorb this heat and transfer the heat to the transformer casing through convection and other means, and then dissipate it into the surrounding environment, thereby keeping the internal temperature of the transformer within a normal range.

Vegetable oil is a renewable resource, mainly derived from natural plant seeds, such as rapeseed oil, soybean oil, etc. Compared with mineral oil, it has less impact on the environment during production and use. When vegetable oil leaks, it can be decomposed by microorganisms in the natural environment and will not cause long-term pollution to soil, water bodies, etc. like mineral oil.
Safety
The flash point of vegetable oil is relatively high, generally above 300°C. The flash point refers to the lowest temperature at which a mixture of vapor and air emitted by a liquid can flash when it comes into contact with a fire source. The high flash point means that during the operation of the transformer, even if there is local overheating, vegetable oil is not easy to burn, greatly reducing the risk of fire.
Biodegradability
Vegetable oil has good biodegradability. It can be decomposed by microorganisms in a shorter period of time, reducing the impact on the ecosystem.
