Product Description

The offshore wind turbine nacelle transformer is a power transformer specially designed to be installed inside the nacelle of a wind turbine. It is a key and unique device in the power transmission system of an offshore wind farm.
The voltage generated by wind turbines is relatively low (usually in the range of 690V to 3.3kV or higher), and the nacelle transformer greatly increases this voltage to the medium voltage level. The main purpose of increasing the voltage is to greatly reduce the loss of electricity during long-distance transmission. This is crucial for offshore wind farms because the distance from the wind turbine to the offshore booster station (and then to the land) may be very far (tens or even hundreds of kilometers).

Due to the installation on the top of the nacelle with limited space, motion (yaw, pitch), large vibration and harsh environment, the offshore wind turbine nacelle transformer needs to have the following special designs:
Space limitation: Nacelle space is extremely valuable, and the transformer must be designed to be very compact to minimize the impact on the nacelle layout and center of gravity.
Weight limitation: Overweight transformers will increase the load on the nacelle and affect the tower and foundation design. Special materials and optimized designs are usually used to reduce weight.
Strict testing: high protection level, strong anti-corrosion, temperature and humidity control, efficient cooling, small space, high heat density.
Electrical performance: high short-circuit withstand capacity, low loss, low noise, overvoltage protection
Intelligent diagnosis: Combined with the SCADA system, early fault warning and status evaluation can be achieved, supporting predictive maintenance and reducing unnecessary offshore operation and maintenance trips.

A dry type transformer, also known as an air-cooled transformer, is a type of transformer that utilizes air or gas instead of liquid (such as oil) for insulation and cooling purposes. This transformer design does not immerse its core and windings in insulating oil, making it distinct from oil-filled transformers.

Types of Dry Type Transformers:
  1. Cast Resin Dry Type Transformer (CRT):
    • Uses epoxy resin to encapsulate windings, protecting them from moisture, dust, corrosion, and other environmental factors.
    • Suitable for high humidity areas, indoor installations, and fire-risk areas due to its non-hygroscopic, non-inflammable, and maintenance-free nature.
    • Available in ratings from 25 kVA to 12,500 kVA, with an insulation class of F (90°C temperature rise).
  2. Vacuum Pressure Impregnated Transformer (VPI):
    • Impregnates windings with class H polyester resin under vacuum and pressure, eliminating air gaps or voids in the insulation.
    • Enhances mechanical strength, dielectric strength, and thermal stability.
    • Suitable for outdoor installations, seismic events, and temperature fluctuations due to its robust construction, moisture-resistant enclosure, and low thermal expansion coefficient.
